Hedgehog theory via Euler calculus

چکیده

Hedgehogs are (possibly singular and self-intersecting) hypersurfaces that describe Minkowski differences of convex bodies in R. They are the natural geometrical objects when one seeks to extend parts of the Brunn-Minkowski theory to a vector space which contains convex bodies. In terms of characteristic functions, Minkowski addition of convex bodies correspond to convolution with respect to the Euler characteristic. In this paper, we extend this relationship to hedgehogs with an analytic support function. In this context, resorting only to the support functions and the Euler characteristic, we give various expressions for the index of a point with respect to a hedgehog.

An analytic study on the Euler-Lagrange equation arising in calculus of variations

The Euler-Lagrange equation plays an important role in the minimization problems of the calculus of variations. This paper employs the differential transformation method (DTM) for finding the solution of the Euler-Lagrange equation which arise from problems of calculus of variations. DTM provides an analytical solution in the form of an infinite power series with easily computable components. S...

Numerical solution of variational problems via Haar wavelet quasilinearization technique

In this paper, a numerical solution based on Haar wavelet quasilinearization (HWQ) is used for finding the solution of nonlinear Euler-Lagrange equations which arise from the problems in calculus of variations. Some examples of variational problems are given and outcomes compared with exact solutions to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

Multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials via Lévy processes

By a symbolic method, we introduce multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials as powers of polynomials whose coefficients involve multivariate Lévy processes. Many properties of these polynomials are stated straightforwardly thanks to this representation, which could be easily implemented in any symbolic manipulation system. A very simple relation between these two families of multivariate po...

On the Existence of Two Solutions for a General Class of Jumping Problems

Via nonsmooth critical point theory we prove the existence of at least two solutions inW 1,p 0 (Ω) for a jumping problem involving the Euler equation of multiple integrals of calculus of variations under natural growth conditions. Some new difficulties arise in comparison with the study of the semilinear and also the quasilinear case.

Lectures on Optimal Control Theory

In the theory of mathematical optimization one try to find maximum or minimum points of functions depending of real variables and of other functions. Optimal control theory is a modern extension of the classical calculus of variations. Euler and Lagrange developed the theory of the calculus of variations in the eighteenth century. Its main ingredient is the Euler equation which was discovered a...
